And Inside There Was Only Water with Grey Goes Black - An Interview

Um desses casos é o trio de New Jersey, Grey Goes Black e seu mais novo trabalho "And Inside There Was Only Water", lançado no final de Março deste ano.

***** Interview with Grey Goes Black *****

Q. When did Grey Goes Black start? Tell us about the history...
1. The history of greygoesblack is kinda long. Matt (guitar vocals) and me (Steve drums, samples, keys,) having been playing together off and on for about 20 years. After a long time not playing together and doing other projects we decided to try playing again. We wrote 4 songs with our bass player who a few days before recording our first ep bailed on us. We had the studio time booked so we went and did the first 4 song ep by ourselves not really knowing what to do next but we wanted to at least have a recorded version of the songs we wrote. After a few failed attempts at trying to find a bassist that has similar goals as us we we're lucky to find James ( bass, backing vocals, samples ,keys). We wrote a few songs together and began playing shows. After about a year we went and recorded our second ep. (war of currents). And a few songs for some compilations. We then started to work on our newest album " and inside there was only water". Which has a much more darker feel to it. Not in a sinster way more of a broken heart hopeless way.

Q: Who are your influences?
2. Our influences kinda are all over the place I would say. The usual suspects apply like Radiohead,Coldplay,u2. But there are more crosses , team sleep , sza, Bowery electric , howling , but not just electronic bands James and I grew up in the NJ hardcore scene so I still listen to alot of the bands I grew up on .

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…

Matt and James will respond with their list

The Cure "Disintegration"
Snapcase "Progression Through Unlearning"
Deftones "Adrenaline"

Matt's top 5
1. Revolver the beatles
2. Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols
3. OK Computer Radiohead
4. Monster Magnet Dopes to infinity
5. Al Green I'm Still in Love with You

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Playing live is a give an take a lot of the local shows are not as crowded as they should be so some times shows can be disappointing but we enjoy playing live as much as possible

Q. How do you describe Grey Goes Black ´sounds?
Greygoesblack has a darker electronic sound not in a nine inch nails type sound but a more slower broken heart kinda way. We combine electronic elements with real instruments I think our sound takes elements from all genres from droning ambient elements to louder shoegaze guitar type sounds.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
6 when it comes time to write new material lately we have been starting with sketches of parts I (Steve) make on the program caustic usually a drumbeat or synth line. I bring the idea or sketch to practice and Matt and James help structure and finish it into a song. That shows the strength of Matt and James as songwriters and musicians as they are able to take a simple sketch and turn it into a complete song

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
7 I would say some new bands that we have been really digging right now would be seaside caves , howling, big/brave , nothing,

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
8 I would love to cover the sza song green mile. It is such an amazing song and I think we could really pull off a fitting version in our style

Q: What are your plans for the future?
9 in the future depending on when this comes out we will have a brand new unreleased song out on the blow up radio comp. We will have a limited run of 25 cassettes coming out on dbd tapes and there will be a limited usb snow globe edition containing all 3 albums all comp songs and some music video stuff. Once that is finished and released we will begin working on the next ep. We have 2 songs already finished and hope to finish 2 or 3 more then record.

Q: Any parting words?
